Some families with school-age children will be able to receive a supplemental payment of $285 to purchase food, according to a new announcement from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Here are the details.

Any family who has qualified for their children to receive free or reduced-price meals at school may qualify for this supplementary benefit, under the program called P-EBT. Some families will receive the payment automatically, while others will need to complete an application form.

The following families will not need to apply: families who received SNAP benefits for the month of March 2020 and have children 5-18 years old as of May 17, 2020. These families will receive P-EBT benefits on their current Lone Star Card by May 22.

The following families will need to apply: families with children up to 21 years old who are certified to receive free or reduced-price meals during the 2019-20 school year. This includes families who received SNAP benefits for the month of March 2020 and have children under 5 and between 19 and 21.

The school district should send you a link to the online application by next week -- that is, by the first week of June. If you don't have access to a computer or don't receive the link, call the school district (Boerne ISD 830-357-2000, Comfort ISD 830-995-6400) or get in touch with us and we'll help you.

If you have more questions about the P-EBT program, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission has published complete information with answers to many questions about the program.
